Cavanah attended James Gillespie's High School
in Edinburgh, leaving age 18. He left the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama
in 1986, after only a term, but later graduated from Drama Centre London in 1994, completing the 3-year course, part of the University of the Arts London
.
Cavanah also trained as a singer, and fronted a local country blues band in Glasgow for two years called Peach County, from 1989 to 1991.
