 with his parents, two sisters and brother. Hillis graduated from Newton South High School. He picked up his unusual nickname "Rib" while in the third grade playing with frogs, and enjoyed the sounds that they make.

He volunteers and works with several charities such as The Los Angeles Childrens Hospital, Habitat For Humanity, The Jimmy Johnson Foundation and The Hendrick Marrow Program.

Hillis married Melissa Blackler four days after their first date but separated in 2008. They have twins Dane and Hannah Hillis. Currently, Hillis is dating former U.S. National Dancesport Champion (Professional Rhythm) and Dancing with the Stars
