Chiles founded the Florida House on Capitol Hill in 1973. It was her vision that created and sustained the House for these many years. She now serves as Chairman Emeritus of the House and is active on the Board.
In 1983, Rhea received the Florida Society of Historic Preservation Award for her leadership in the restoration of the historic building that became Florida House. While in Washington, Chiles was President of the Congressional Wives' Group, and Chairman of the Ladies of the U.S. Senate First Lady's Luncheon. In 2009, Chiles was designated a Great Floridian
