The Red River Zoo is a zoo
in Fargo, North Dakota
. The zoo's first 8 acres (32,374.9 m²) opened in the spring of 1999, and the zoo gained AZA
-accreditation on September 25, 2006. The RRZ sits on 33 acres (133,546.4 m²) of land that was once a farm (the George Anderson family "Red River Ranch"). Several of the farm buildings were modified and are used today by the zoo. It is home to over 300 animals from 75 different species, including some of the few red panda
s in captivity in the world. It also includes a 1928 carousel
that was fully restored in 1995 and donated to the zoo by the Diederich family. Its most recent addition was the timberwolf exhibit featuring family of 5 wolves donated to the zoo at birth. They can be viewed from outside or inside a "trapper's cabin" that has two large viewing windows to observe the wolf family.
The zoo specializes in rare and endangered species from areas north of the 40th latitudinal parallel so that the animals can still be active in the winter.
It is the fourth and most recent zoo built in North Dakota

The Red River Zoo receives no public funds and so it completely depends on memberships, admissions, donations, and grants to the Red River Zoological Society and by its members. The Society was formed in 1993.
