Political activism

In 2001 Deane was a founding member of the Ireland–Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and served as its chairperson from 2002-5.

In August 2010 he initiated the "Irish artists' pledge to boycott Israel", arguing that "artists who perform in Israel are backing it whether they like it or not."
