The Rax Alpine region, together with the Schneealpe and Schneeberg belong to the river source protected area (Quellschutzgebiet) of the 1st Viennese Mountain Spring Water Supply Network (I. Wiener Hochquellenwasserleitung). The Schneeberg and Rax are separated by the Höllental
