They formed a feudal aristocracy over the territories they controlled.

He was a veteran politician and started his political career as Member of the Abbottabad District Council in the 1950s,he was also elected as Vice Chairman.His father,Sultan Haider Zaman,uncle Raja Manochehr,brother Sultan Rukan Zaman and nephew Sultan Eraj Zaman were Members of Provincial Assembly.His son Raja Faial Zaman was a minister in KPK and is a sitting MPA.His son Dr Aamir Zaman remained Nazim of Haripur District.During a long political career,he served as Minister,Senior Minister, Chief Mininter KPK and opposition leader in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly for a time.He was also elected as Member National Assembly
of Pakistan in 1988.Earlier he served as Federal Minister for Water and Power from 1981 to 1985.He was a keen agriculturist and had best orange gardens in the country.He was fond of race horses and remained steward of Rawalpindi Race Club.He also owned best grey hounds.
