With the completion of this work in March 1993, there will be a direct double broad gauge line between Lucknow and Delhi for the first time. The existing metre gauge service was closed around 7 January 1992 and the broad gauge line was commissioned by 15 March 1992. With this, the Kanpur New Delhi Shatabdi Express was also extended to Lucknow. During the financial year 1992, the Northern Railway will convert a further 443 km of metre gauge track to broad gauge. The gauge conversion has become known as Project Unigauge
