The student population is approximately 2,800 (89% Anglo, 9% Hispanic, 1% African-American, <1% Asian, and <1% Native American). QISD has six campuses (three elementary, one middle/junior high school, one high school, and one alternative) as well as various support facilities. QISD's mascot is the panther, and the school colors are blue and white.

D.C. Cannon Elementary School and C. B. Thompson Middle School are considered to be Recognized campuses by the TEA. A.E. Butler Intermediate School posted the highest scores in its history falling just short of the Recognized rating and is considered Academically Acceptable. W.H. Ford High School is considered Academically Acceptable. Over the past two years from 2008-2010, the district improved 18% in math and 13% in science TAKS scores. The district improved in every other tested area to account for significant academic gains.
