It was originally part of Autoroute 10
. On September 29, 2006, the Ministère des Transports du Québec announced its decision to assign a new number to this portion of Autoroute 10, claiming that it is more consistent with the Quebec road numbering plan, and that it would benefit motorists by helping them to orient themselves. As a result, Autoroute 10 now ends at the end of its concurrency
with Autoroute 55.
The autoroute is listed on the Ministère des Transports du Québec website as having been opened to traffic in 1988. The eastern part (east of Exit 7, formerly Exit 150), opened in 1992, is a two-lane freeway
