, North Carolina. The club opened in 1988 with a basic pool and fitness center. That summer the club debuted three 9-hole courses for their members. The club ran into a standstill for a short period of time as Murray Savings and Loans went under during the savings and loan crisis
of 1989-1990. This resulted in the government placing Prestonwood Country Club in the hands of the Resolution Trust Corporation
. The RTC was set up to help liquidate real estate and financial institutions that it acquired from companies that were going under. In the case of Prestonwood Country Club, Don Thomas stepped in to work with the RTC under the conditions that if the country club did not progress, the RTC would step in and shut it down. Prestonwood Country Club was able to prosper and eventually was bought by James Goodnight
and three co-owners of SAS in 1991. As the economy moved out of the recession, they owners decided to expand Prestonwood's residential status by building more houses and roads. Prestonwood Country Club has developed into a full residential community . By early 1996, the club had expanded to include 54 holes of golf. Also, in order to stay competitive, the course decided to rebuild the pool and fitness center, which now consists of 8000 square feet (743.2 m²) of space. In 2003, the club added a new tennis center, which had six new Tennis courts, as a result of a tennis program that included adults and a junior program as well. In 2005 Tom Stewart was appointed the new General Manager. During this time, Prestonwood built a 60000 square feet (5,574.2 m²) addition to their club house, which consisted of a ballroom
(provides space for 400-person dinner or 1000 person cocktail), the new Red Fox Pub, and a new Men’s Locker Room. The most recent additions include a renovation of the pro shop and the ladies locker room and card room. Prestonwood Country Club has put into motion a 3-year plan to renovate all three golf courses. The plan is to close one course at a time so to allow the members continuous play on the other two courses. The club now supports 1,950 members between golf, tennis, social, and dining memberships. It employs 270 employees, of which 150 are full time.
Fairways: The Fairways was opened in January 1995. The course yardage is 6,452 with a Rating/ Slope of 71.7/134.
Meadows: The Meadows was opened in August 1988. The course yardage is 7,132 with a Rating/ Slope of 74.9/140.
Highlands: The Highlands was opened in January 1993. The course yardage is 7,043 with a Rating/ Slope 74.7/140.
In addition, it has a driving range, three practice greens, and a short game area. The club has PGA
professionals.

SAS Championship: The SAS Championship
is a Champions Tour event that has been hosted by Prestonwood Country Club since 2001. The course plays at about 7,177 yards and is a mix of the Highlands and Meadows courses.
Past Champions Include:
Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic: This tournament, which was named after the late Jim Valvano, was started to support cancer. It was played at Prestonwood Country Club for 13 years starting in 1994. While at Prestonwood the tournament raised over $12 million and drew in celebrities as big as Michael Jordan, Bob Costas, and Kevin Costner. Due to a scheduling conflict, the tournament was moved to the Pinehurst area.
