Prerow on the Darß
is situated between the historical hanseatic towns of Rostock and Stralsund. It is part of the peninsula Darß
, to which also belong the villages of Born
and Wieck. In Prerow you will find fine sandy, stoneless beaches and a beautiful landscape. It is hard to say where the forest ends and the village begins. The “Darß
er Primeval Forest” has over 50 km of footpaths and cycle ways, a horse riding lane and room for horse drawn carriages. West of this you will find the West-Beach – wild and romantic with rugged terrain created by wind and waves, a tingling thrill of adventure and freedom. South of the village of Prerow starts the fascinating “Bodden” landscape, here you can take a trip on a steam paddle boat. You can see wildlife at first hand, nesting areas and various birds as the seasons change.
The seaside resort Prerow is located within the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park
which stretches from Ahrenshoop along the southern coast to the island of Hiddensee.
Prerow itself has been a fishing village. It can look back over 130 years as a seaside resort. Thanks to the climatic contrasts of sea, meadows, forest and reeds in combination with good water quality, it was always known as a health resort. In 1998, the Minister of Social and Economic Affairs officially recognized the village as a seaside and health resort.

The village of Prerow with its over 1600 inhabitants has become the largest village on the Darß
. The typical thatched roof cottages are well-preserved and have given the village calmness long ago to this day. Prerow boasts the oldest lighthouse in Germany with its 160th anniversary in 2008.
The other famous landmark, “Seafarer church”, is over 280 years old. It is the oldest fane at the peninsula Darß
, build up in 1726/28. It is also the oldest regional Lutheran church. There are offered Evangelic-Lutheran as well as Roman-Catholic services, art expositions, guided tours, classical concerts and special events.
The Darß
-Museum was founded in 1953. There were organized various events throughout the summer. The museum displays the cultural characteristics of the region, minted by the landscape on the sea. The exhibition contains information about geological history, traditional sailing boats, the typical architectural style, flora and fauna. On Fridays, the members of staff speak to all guests in the traditional local language Low German

history of tourism
After the big tide in 1872 an intense development of tourism began. Within a few years the number of visiting tourists was increasing enormously. The barkeeper Mr. Herrmann Scharmberg first organized simple bathing facilities. On the 12th of November in 1878 he asked the royal government of Stralsund for the Establishment of a Baltic bathing resort. His request was granted. Two years later, in 1880, eighty visitors made their way to the village, which at the time had a population of approximately 1550. The date is celebrated as the inclusion of Prerow into the circle of the Baltic resorts. In 2010, Prerow, as the second biggest resort in this region, celebrates 130 years as a bathing resort.
