Polyosma
Encyclopedia
Polyosma is a genus of about 60 species of trees native to south-east Asia. They occur from China
south through south-east Asia to the east coast of Australia
, and also in New Caledonia
.
Its taxonomic placement has long been uncertain: it was traditionally placed in Grossulariaceae, but in the APG II system
it was given its own family, Polyosmaceae, which was unplaced as to order within the euasterids II (campanulids) clade
. More recent research found Polyosmaceae to be a sister to the Escalloniaceae
, so for simplicity's sake the Angiosperm Phylogeny Website
now recommends the latter family be expanded to include this genus.

The APG II system of plant classification is the second, now obsolete, version of a modern, mostly molecular-based, system of plant taxonomy that was published in April 2003 by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group. It was a revision of the first APG system, published in 1998, and was superseded in 2009...

Clade
A clade is a group consisting of a species and all its descendants. In the terms of biological systematics, a clade is a single "branch" on the "tree of life". The idea that such a "natural group" of organisms should be grouped together and given a taxonomic name is central to biological...
