Pitt Street Mall is the pedestrianised section of Pitt Street
in the Sydney CBD, Australia
. It is one block long between Market Street
and King Street
and is one of Australia's busiest and most cosmopolitan shopping precincts.
Despite its small size, it hosts many flagship chain store
s and more than 500 specialty stores. It is one of Sydney's main shopping streets, and floorspace rents are correspondingly the highest in Australia, and the fourth highest in the world in terms of city streets. CBRE even rated Pitt Street Mall as the second most expensive street for retail rents in the world second to only New York's 5th Avenue.
A number of shopping centres and arcades front the Mall, including Westfield Sydney, Strand Arcade, Mid City Centre

took over management of the majority of retail space in the mall through their acquisition of Sydney Central Plaza, Imperial Arcade, and management rights on Skygarden. Westfield promptly amalgamated the four properties into Westfield Sydney. Stage one of Westfield Sydney opened on Thursday October 28, 2010 with over 130 flagship fashion, food and lifestyle stores. When stage two opens in 2011, Westfield Sydney will be home to over 330 flagship fashion, food and lifestyle stores across nine floors (when including the former Sydney Central Plaza). Along with these extensive upgrades to shopping centres, the mall itself recently saw a $A10 million refurbishment carried out. This included the provision of new seating as well as new pavers and a catenary lighting system (which will be installed in the coming months).
