Encyclopedia
Pinjar Road is an important arterial road in Perth, Western Australia
. Traversing the East Wanneroo
area within the City of Wanneroo, it is a regional road designed for the movement of heavy goods and freight from the state's north and from the Neerabup industrial area. The road formerly connected with Old Yanchep Road to meet Wanneroo Road again near the Yanchep Beach turnoff.
It forms part of State Route 86.

due to increased traffic http://www.wanneroo.wa.gov.au/scripts/viewarticle.asp?NID=9499. Funding for the realignment was an issue as the responsibility of construction fell to the developers of the adjoining Carramar Golf Course Estate, Peet Limited, and the original plans did not call for construction of this road until at least 2008-2009.
In order to expedite construction and relieve traffic pressures, the city agreed to prefund construction of the realignment by the developer enabling it to be completed and opened midway through 2006. Prior to the opening of this realignment however, the extension of Joondalup Drive
from Wanneroo Road
to Neaves Road was completed and opened to traffic. This in turn caused a large number of heavy vehicles coming from East Wanneroo to deviate through roads within the suburb of Banksia Grove
to connect with Joondalup Drive. As a consequence of this, the city implemented an order to limit the types of vehicles allowed to pass through the suburb http://www.wanneroo.wa.gov.au/scripts/viewarticle.asp?NID=10152 and imposed on-the-spot penalties of up to $5,000 for offenders. The problems giving rise to these penalties may have occurred sooner if not for continued delays with the opening of Joondalup Drive, resulting from a number of disputes and issues between various local and state government agencies involved in the construction of the Joondalup Drive extension.
The need for this order was removed when the city subsequently closed the portion of Pinjar Road south of the Joondalup Drive/Neaves Road intersection, and north of the Yandella Promenade (formerly Clarkson Avenue)/Pinjar Road intersection. The closed section of Pinjar Road (now renamed Mornington Drive and Greenvale Place) has been turned into a local road that can only be accessed via Tumbleweed Drive, Banksia Grove.
New Pinjar Road follows the Old Pinjar Road route up until Yandella Promenade, where it deviates from the original junction at Old Yanchep Road/Joondalup Drive, to a large roundabout 2km south-west, completely bypassing Banksia Grove and forming a boundary road between Banksia Grove and Tapping.

Division of Old Road
After the opening of the New Pinjar Road in 2005, Old Pinjar Road was blocked and divided into four distinct parts, completely ending its use as an arterial road for traffic:- Old Yanchep Road to Joondalup Drive - this road remains the same as it was, but has now been completely renamed "Old Yanchep Road" for its entire length.
- Joondalup Drive to Yandella Promenade - this portion was blocked and closed off at both ends, turning it into a very long local road that can only be accessed through a network of smaller roads in Banksia Grove and Mariginiup. The northern half of the road was renamed to "Greenvale Place", while the southern half became "Mornington Drive". The northern end is sealed off from Old Yanchep Road and Joondalup Drive by large rocks, while at the southern end, 300m of road was ripped up from the ground, creating a buffer between Mornington Drive and the rest of Old Pinjar Road, south of Yandella Promenade.
- Yandella Promenade to Ashley Road - like the above portion, this part was blocked and closed off at both ends, but it runs parallel to the New Pinjar Road for its whole length and therefore still assumes the name Pinjar Road. It can only be accessed from two new turnoffs on New Pinjar Road. Like Mornington Drive, 250m of road was ripped up at the southern end of this road, sealing it off from the rest of Old Pinjar Road.
- Ashley Road to Wanneroo Road - this remains the same as it was, but deviates west and runs into the New Pinjar Road just after the Ashley Road junction.
