History

The old pine

 tree as a relict, endemic tree was the decoration of Šar Mountains with its huge size. Pine was over 25 meters high, 1.5 meters wide, crust thickness 10 cm, and it was in a good health. Pine was visited by various delegations and admired them. King Aleksandar Karađorđević in 1926 placed on it memorial plaque with the year of planting. As a historical monument and natural rarity, the pine tree was placed under state protection in 1961. It was given suggestion by state institutions for nature protection, that Šar Mountains National Park should be nominated for world natural heritage under UNESCO

 protection, because of its biological, geographical, ethnic varieties and cultural and historical heritage. As part of this nomination this Old pine tree was included in the proposal. Destruction

In July 1999, Albanian extremists burned and destroyed the pine, the old monastery church of St. Archangel and the whole orthodox village cemetery, before the eyes of the international community. Only the stump
