Paul Andrew Nuttall is a former chairman of the United Kingdom Independence Party
, and a Member of the European Parliament
for the North West England
region. He was elected in 2009
. At 32 when given chairmanship of the party, Paul was UKIP’s youngest ever Chairman, youngest ever MEP and is a member of UKIP's youth wing, "Young Independence".
Paul Nuttall was educated at Savio Salesian College and at Hugh Baird College
, during which he played youth football for Tranmere Rovers, and earned his history degree at Liverpool Hope University
. After living and working abroad for a couple of years he returned to Merseyside to become a history lecturer at Hugh Baird and Hope University, both of which he is a former pupil.
Paul Nuttall has been a member of UKIP since 2004 and formed the party’s South Sefton branch in 2005.
In the 2005 general election
, Nuttall contested the UK Parliament
seat of Bootle
, and came 4th with 4% of the vote. In 2008
he contested Derby Ward for the Sefton Borough Council elections and was runner-up with 38% of the total vote. In the 2010 general election he again unsuccessfully contested the seat of Bootle, coming 4th with 6% of the vote.
He announced at UKIP's 2010 conference in Torquay that he will shortly be stepping down as Party Chairman.
Under re-elected former leader Nigel Farage
he contested the Oldham East and Saddleworth (UK Parliament constituency) by-election in which he came 4th place with 5.8% of the vote thus saving his deposit.
