In his book Eclectic Views on Gay Male Pornography: Pornucopia, author Todd G. Morrison noted Carrigan has portrayed an individual of heterosexual orientation who experiments in gay sexual play with another man. Morrison commented that this "indicates not so much the theme of sexual substitution that is often suggested by heterosexual or all-male scenarios, but what might be described as the theme of conversion, where the straight man discovers, sometimes to his surprise, that gay sex is different from, and possibly better than, its heterosexual equivalent."
Carrigan directed films in the pornographic industry from 1997 to 2005. Carrigan was recognized for his work in the industry in 2001 and 2002 with award nominations from the GayVN Awards. He was nominated for "Best Supporting Actor" for his role in the 2001 film Demolition Daddy, and in the same year, the film Triple Play, directed by Carrigan, was nominated for "Best Specialty Release". In 2002, the Carrigan-directed film Sensuous Grappling 2 received a GayVN Award nomination for "Best Specialty Release".
In his autobiography Out of the Blue: Confessions of an Unlikely Porn Star, fellow pornography actor Blue Blake wrote positively of Carrigan's physical features: "Paul was a total dreamboat. ... he had roughly hewn features and a stocky build." Blake commented that he enjoyed collaborating with Carrigan, writing, "Of course, I loved the men like Bo Garrett
