On 25 April 2009 Appleby lost his British title against Martin Lindsay
at the Ulster Hall
, Belfast. The fight was stopped in round 6 after some heavy blows from Lindsay, although Appleby did not suffer a knockdown in the fight. The Ulsterman outboxed Appleby from start to finish with a very effective counter-attack style.
On 30 September 2008, Appleby was chosen as Britain's Best Young Boxer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Club.
