for Teignbridge
from 1983 until 2001. By 1989 he was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department of Employment. He resigned from the government in 1990, after he was arrested for drink-driving.
Under the leadership of John Major
, Nicholls served as Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party but was again forced to resign, after labelling Germans "warmongers" and the French "collaborators". Along with Donal Blaney, Greg Smith, and Ben Pickering he helped establish the Young Britons' Foundation
and is chairman of it. He also speaks to visiting young Americans as part of the People to People organisation.
He lost his seat to Richard Younger-Ross
of the Liberal Democrats.
