Smith was born in North Carolina, but was raised in Anniston, Alabama

, to minister parents. When he graduated from Saks High School he attended a community college and later transferred to Auburn University

 where he maintained a 3.87 GPA. Smith later dropped out, with his parents blessing, and decided to pursue music in Atlanta. He formed a group with his brothers called Melange and began making themselves known in and around Atlanta. He began writing songs to impress a girl he met named Erika Nuri, because she herself was a songwriter (Pink, Fantasia, Xscape, Babyface). When his manager heard one of those songs, he asked Smith to write more. He is now part of the production group "The Clutch
