The Real GDP growth at the time was recorded at a healthy 6.2% for the fiscal year 2005-06 but subsequently, various problems such as heavy burden of taxation on the lower-income groups, low industrial output and low direct foreign investments, compounded by the situation resulting from Pakistan's involvement in the War against Terror and its attendant fallout, brought the country to the verge of bankruptcy.
