Frias was born in Rio de Janeiro
, and the family moved to São Paulo
in 1918. He left school at 14 and worked for a bank, a real estate company, and as a civil servant before founding Grupo Folha in 1962 with his business partner Carlos Caldeira Filho.
They own or control newspapers Folha de São Paulo, Agora, and Valor Econômico, publisher Publifolha, distributor Transfolha, and Brazil’s biggest online portal, Universo Online
(founded in 1996).
Frias died of kidney failure at his home in São Paulo.
