Transport

The town is the headquarters of Malawi Railways

. The railway at Nsanje is however closed needing major investment. The main road north connecting the town to the rest of Malawi is being upgraded and sealed and scheduled to be completed in 2010.

Shipping

A project is currently underway to dredge part of the Shire River

 in order to make sea transport to Malawi viable. Eventually the hope is that there will be a port in Nsanje connecting the Shire to the Zambezi

River and finally to the Indian Ocean. As of September 2010, the main concrete work on the jetty was complete with the river held back by a dam. In spite of government promises of a 2010 opening this would seem highly unlikely as dredging work is un-started.
