Established in 1946, it was granted town status in 1952. In 2006, the city covered an area of 26,325 hectares, 1,120 hectares of which was residential area.

, the area where the city now stands was a place of ferocious battles with the White Czechs.

, a refinery grew up, forming a large village of approximately 14,000 people. However, the location turned out to be so advantageous that it was decided to develop the village into a major industrial center. In September 1951, first working refineries started operating, on February 22, 1952, following the decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, Novo-Kuybyshev was granted town status and renamed Novokuybyshevsk.
