. Derek Brower played for the Syracuse Orangemen NCAA Div. 1 mens basketball team. Brower became a central figure in the NCAA implementing the 'intentional foul' rule for basketball. In the NCAA tournament his junior season, Western Kentucky decided their best chance of overcoming a large Syracuse lead was to deliberately foul Brower before Syracuse would inbound the basketball. This resulted in the comical site of Brower running around the court (without the ball) trying to avoid being intentionally fouled by Western Kentucky players.
August Belmont, raised his racing horses at his estate which is now called Belmont Lake State Park. There is still a flat circular plot of ground just south of Southern State Parkway on the western side of Belmont Avenue where his trainers worked the horses when they were in New York for the racing season. Austin Corbin, who developed Coney Island in the 1870s before he became the manager of the Long Island Railroad, built his summer residence along the shores of Deer Lake. Col. M. Robert Guggenheim, an industrialist and brother to the founder of Newsday, also resided in this section of the island.
