Character background

Nikki came to town in late 1989. She was introduced as the girlfriend of Travis Bucknell, a man who wanted to commit suicide. Nikki tried to reason with him, and he even tried to pull her down with him, but Cruz Castillo ended up saving the day. Nikki developed a crush on Cruz, but he was not interested in her. It was revealed that Nikki was actually Maria Nicoletta Gonzalez, a policewoman working undercover. One of her first assignments consisted of saving the lives of Kelly Capwell

Kelly Capwell was a fictional character on the American soap opera Santa Barbara. She was one of the original characters on the show, and was one of three characters on the show that was recast four times.  and Ric Castillo, who were both targets of a dangerous criminal, Craig Hunt. Nikki was wounded in a battle with Craig and ended up in a hospital, where she formed a friendship with Michael Donnelly.

After being released from the hospital, Nikki was found by Marcos Llamera, a man involved in drug traffic, and it was revealed that Nikki had previously worked for him. Nikki's brother Amado was held captive and she was forced back into the drug business in order to rescue her him. Nikki confessed her crimes to Michael and asked for his help. Marcos died of snake bite, but Marcos' boss Benny, who then turned out to be Kirk Cranston, kidnapped Nikki and Michael. They were rescued by Cruz.

Nikki was finally happy. She put her past behind her and concentrated on rebuilding her relationship with her brother, and developing her relationship with Michael. Michael proposed and Nikki accepted, but an explosion at the office of the Blue Sky Brigade wounded her, and she died as Michael held her in his arms.
