where he studied with Ildebrando Pizzetti
. His music was first recorded in the early 1960s, and he produced a large body of work, reaching the height of his fame with his oratorio
, The Passion of Martin Luther King (1968), premiered in 1974. In the mid-1980s, his career was cut short by a degenerative disease. He died in New Rochelle, N.Y. on March 16, 1994.
