New York State Route 225
Encyclopedia
New York State Route 225 (NY 225) is a state highway
in the Southern Tier
of New York
, United States
. It is a loop route
off NY 352
that connects the town of Big Flats
(near the city of Elmira
) and the city of Corning
to the hamlet of Caton within the town of the same name
. The portion of NY 225 within Corning is maintained by the city; the remainder is maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation
.
in the town of Big Flats
, located 3 miles (5 km) west of the city of Elmira
in southwest Chemung County
. It heads southwest as Hendy Creek Road to the Chemung River
, which it crosses by way of the Fitch Bridge. On the opposite riverbank, NY 225 passes through the community of Golden Glow Heights as it turns to follow a more westerly routing. The highway meets one roadway of note—Dutch Hill Road (County Route 36)—before crossing into Steuben County
.
In the town of Caton
, NY 225 becomes Hendy Hollow Road and continues west to the small hamlet of Caton, where it intersects Tannery Creek Road (County Route 120). NY 225 turns north at this intersection to follow Caton Creek out of the hamlet and into a valley, where the highway becomes Caton Road. After 4 miles (6 km), the valley gives way to more open terrain as NY 225 re-approaches the Chemung River. At Davis Road, NY 225 enters the riverside village of South Corning
. Caton Road terminates at the center of the village; however, NY 225 continues northwestward along Park Avenue, paralleling the Chemung as both enter the city of Corning
. The route remains on Park Avenue until the street's final block, where NY 225 veers onto Conhocton Street instead to end at Denison Parkway (NY 352) east of downtown Corning.
All of NY 225 outside of the Corning city limits is maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation
. The 0.45 mile (0.724203 km) of the route within Corning are maintained by the city.
to Corning
was originally designated as the southernmost portion of the new NY 44 as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. At the same time, the road extending east from Caton to the town of Big Flats
outside of Elmira
became part of an extended NY 13
. NY 44 was renumbered as NY 414
ca. 1935 to eliminate duplication with the newly-designated U.S. Route 44. In the early 1940s, NY 13 was truncated on its southern end to downtown Elmira, leaving the Caton – Big Flats highway unnumbered. NY 414 was truncated to Corning in the late 1940s, at which time its former routing from Caton to Corning became NY 225.
By the late 1970s, NY 13's former routing between Caton and Big Flats had mostly become county routes. Within Steuben County
, it was part of County Route 120; in Chemung County
, all of its former alignment between the county line and Golden Glow Heights Drive in Big Flats was designated as County Route 7. However, from Golden Glow Heights Drive to Water Street (modern NY 352
), the former alignment of NY 13 was still state-maintained as a reference route. On April 1, 1980, ownership and maintenance of CR 120 east of Caton was transferred from Steuben County to the state of New York
as part of a highway maintenance swap. All of CR 7 in Chemung County was also transferred to the state at some point. The Caton – Big Flats roadway, now state-maintained along its entire length, became an eastward extension of NY 225 in the early 1990s.
