The town is also famous for its annual Fourth of July celebration held every year at the town's park. Numerous vendors set up and there is an all-day tractor pull and car show. The Masons lodge serves breakfast until 11:00 am. Those wishing to watch the fireworks gather around the park's three ponds and spread blankets for the hour-long show. The town's volunteer fire department, Coal Creek Twp Fire & Rescue set off the fireworks. People gather from all around to watch the show, even lining the town's outlying roads to watch from their cars.

In December 2003, tragedy struck the small town of New Richmond, Indiana. On December 4, 2003, the town's marshal was summoned to a domestic violence call within the town's corporate limits. The marshal arrested the perpetrator and a violent confrontation ensued. The marshal subdued the suspect but later died on December 5 due to a heart attack from the struggle. This was the one and only police death in the town of New Richmond.
