NCHS is currently a 5A school with a student body of more than 2,000. It has two campuses: a main campus serving grades 10 through 12 and a 9th Grade Annex on the same property. The school has received recognition for its JROTC program, band, journalism program, and extremely successful Academic Decathlon team.

During the mid-1990s, the New Caney High School varsity football program underwent a notable turnaround, making the playoffs multiple times. Due in large part to a much needed change in the coaching staff and moving into the 4A division where the Eagles could better compete. In addition, the New Caney High School Ninth Grade Annex was opened.
In 2008 the University Interscholastic League
switched New Caney from District 21 4A to District 14 5A. New Caney High School also received a ranking of 121 out of 145 in an assessment released by the Houston Chronicle
rating high schools in the Houston area . In an article announcing the winner of the newspaper's inaugural Chronicle Cup, which ranked local high schools in terms of athletic achievement, New Caney High School was listed as "bringing up the rear" .
New Caney High School's Academic Decathlon team has won its regional competition every year since 1996 and has consistently achieved success at the state competition for medium schools. At the 2008 state competition, the team defeated longtime rival Friendswood High School
and finished second to Seven Lakes High School
after scoring 47,332 points. Both the New Caney and Seven Lakes teams broke the previous state scoring record for medium schools.
The Broadcast Journalism program became part of the Channel One (1) television network in 2003 and produced a segment seen by 9.5 million students dealing with the 2004 presidential election. In 2006 New Caney won seven UIL Broadcast Journalism awards at the state competition held at The University of Texas, three were first place medals. New Caney finished the 2007-2008 school year as the top producing high school in the United States on Teachertube, with over 100 journalism productions. During that same year, teachers voted three New Caney Journalism podcasts to the top twenty in the country. These productions were called Eagle Vision.
New Caney ISD has started construction on a new high school named Porter High School that is scheduled to open in the Fall 2010.

Elementary school attendance zones that feed into New Caney High include those of, Aikin, New Caney, and Valley Ranch, and a portion of Porter Elementary attendance zone. Because all 6th grade residents of NCISD attend the New Caney 6th Grade Campus for 6th grade, that campus feeds into Porter High School.
