He studied law and was admitted to the bar. He served in the New York State Assembly

 for four years, was District Attorney of Oswego County, and served seven years in the New York Senate. Stranahan resigned from the senate in 1903 after he was appointed Collector of the Port of New York by President Theodore Roosevelt
