Naukowa i Akademicka Sieć Komputerowa ("research and academic computer network") or NASK is a Polish
research and development organization and data networks operator. It is also the national registry
of the .pl
domain.
The NASK-maintained national register of Internet names in the “.pl” domain is a fully automated system in which domains are registered by over 98 NASK partners. Partners operate in the “registry-registrars” system based on EPP
, in which NASK (registry) allows partner companies (registrars) to register domains in the national “.pl” register, thus enabling them to enter the market with an independent offer. Full automation and registrars’ direct access to the central database are the system’s core features. At present, over 99.9% of registrations in the “.pl” domain are carried out by the registrars.
NASK was the first to have introduced registration of domains with national diacritic signs, the so-called IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names) in all European and many non-European languages (e.g. in Hebrew). NASK is the world’s first national Internet domain registrar to have obtained the ISO 9001:2000 certificate covering the entire Internet domain registration and maintenance process. It is also one of a few national registrars to have made available the main DNS servers for the national domain in the IPv6 protocol, and to enable the registration of domains with an indication of an IPv6 address.
NASK is a member of International Telecommunication Union
(ITU). In its capacity of an ITU Sector Member, NASK has joined the work of the organization, particularly by the participation of its Domains Department in the work on IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names) and ENUM (a standard for telecommunication subscribers’ identification). Andrzej Bartosiewicz from NASK is working as "Rapporteur" of ITU-T Study Group 17 (Security, languages and telecommunication software) in the field of Internationalized Domain Names.
NASK is the host of an information and educational portal “Poland.pl”, and the founder of “CERT Polska

Complying with the European Safer Internet program, NASK has established the “Hotline” – a national contact point for counteracting illegal Internet content, and the “Awarenode” – a national node of the EU’s “Awareness” campaign, promoting the principles of secure Internet usage. CERT Polska participates in many international initiatives aimed at network and IT system security, e.g. it is a member of FIRST (Forum of Incidents Response and Security Teams) and cooperates with CERT/CC and ENISA European Network and Information Security Agency
