NIT Nagaland is one of ten newly sanctioned NITs by the Government of India
in 2009, as part of the of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan (2007–2012). However, due to lack of infrastructure, it is currently functioning out of NIT Silchar in Assam
. It is slated to start functioning from a temporary campus at Chumukedima
in January 2012. Meanwhile, land for a permanent campus was acquired in the Niuland area.
