The National Film Award for Best Actress (officially known as Rajat Kamal Award for the Best Actress) is an honor presented annually at the National Film Awards
of India to an actress who has delivered the best performance in a leading role within the Indian film industry. The award was first given in 1968.
The first recipient was Nargis Dutt from Bollywood
, who was honored at the 15th National Film Award (1968) for her performance in Raat Aur Din
The actresses who have won it the most in this category are Shabana Azmi
