The agency is similar to the FCC which regulates and promotes competition in civil communications market in the United States.

History

The NCC is a relatively new independent statutory agency created on February 22, 2006 to regulate the information, communications and broadcasting industry.

NCC was tasked with the responsibility to ensure level playing field competition in the communications industry, consumer protection, privacy rights, development of universal service for remote and rural regions. It also develop new standards for emerging technologies that will improve access, lower cost and deliver services to remote areas.

Departmental Structure

The agency has a total of seven commissioners serving full time on a three year term. The commissioners elect a Chairperson and two vice chairperson to lead the agency.

The agency also includes a law enforcement section designated by the Ministry of Interior.
