Nandalur
Nandalur is on the west bank of river Cheyyeru. Once it was a famous Buddhist centre in Rayalaseema. In 1913 Buddhist caves and viharas were discovered.Sowmyanath Temple, here is a very big temple, situated nearly on ten acres of site. It is a replica of Thiruvannamalai and patronized by Cholas, Pandyas, Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara, Pottapi and Matli Kings. Here most of the inscriptions, are in Tamil. Lord Sowmyanatha is installed on an elevated place and attracts pilgrims with his glittering beauty.
The temple and Buddhist caves are worth seeing at this town and is well connected by road and rail.
Nandalur is famous for the temple of Sri Soumyanatha Swamy, which is located just about a 2 minute walk from the city. The main attraction of the village is this temple built in the old Chola style by the Matli kings who ruled the Cuddapah district.
The Presiding deity here is Sri Soumyanatha Swamy and Sri Maha Lakshmi Ammavaru. The temple is old and holds quite a bit of archealogical importance. Every year during the month of July, Kalyanotsavam to the Lord is performed here. Nandalur is one of the two temples in Cuddapah district where the Government sends pearls to the Lord during the performance of Kalyanotsavam. Incidentally, the other place is Ontimitta which is about 8 kilometers from Nandalur.
The temple has four Raja gopurams overlooking the four directions. The main idol is Sri Soumyanatha Swamy facing East. Legend has it that the Lord is another Avatara of Sri Venkateswara Swamy. Tirupati is towards the east of Nandalur. The idol resembles the idol of Sri Venkateswara Swamy in Tirupati, the only difference being here in Nandalur, the Lord has "Abhaya Hastham" whereas in Tirumala the Lord has "Kati Hastham". Normally in all the temples dedicated to Sri Venkateswara Swamy, the idol will be carved as having "Kati Hastham". Also in the temple there is a shrine dedicated for Sri Yoga Narasimha Swamy near to the entrance of the sanctorum.
The Temple of Sri Soumyanatha Swamy
The prime attraction of Nandalur is the temple of Soumyanatha Swami. Soumyanatha Swami is another name and form of Lord Venkateshwara. The temple is constructed with 108 pillars and spreads over an area of about ten acres. As you go around the temple, you ll come across many amazing facts that leave you astonishing. One such captivating fact of this temple is that the deity can be visible from sunrise to sunset without any source of light in the temple. Another fascinating thing is, though the idol of the deity is at a distance of 100 feet from the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum, the deity of the God is visible clearly.
It leaves you wondering and incredulous but yet, a true fact. On a particular day of the year, the sun rays touch the feet of the main deity in this temple.
The mysteries do not end here. It is said that on a full moon day if a water vessel is placed at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum, the image of the Lord is reflected in the water even at a distance of 100 feet. To believe these mystifying facts, you have to see it all yourself by visiting this temple.
The whole of the temple is constructed with red-stone. Though the temple is in Andhra Pradesh, which is a Telugu State, you can see more of Tamil inscriptions on the temple walls rather than Telugu. On the walls of the temple you can find many symbols of fish, the Sun and the Moon.
This can give you an impression of the beliefs and civilization of the then society. You can also see a carving of a huge fish on the ceiling of the temple. The local people say that some day in future the fish will turn alive and swim in the ocean.
A distinguishing feature of the temple is that the pillars of the Mandapam (porch) have lion s head at the bottom of the pillar unlike other temples, which has it above the pillar. Because of this, the local people here say that there is another temple below this temple.
There are other small temples of Prayoga Narasimha Swami, Ganapati and Anjaneya and a huge Yagnashala. There is a small pond in the temple premises and a huge one outside.
It is said that there are more than 100 Siva temples on the banks of Bahuda River, which flows close to the temple.

HISTORY of KADAPA(CUDDAPAH)
Cuddapah is considered to be one of the district endowed with rich history. Though its history goes back to second century B C, primarily it starts with Mourya & Satavahana dynasty as per the Archeological survey evidences. It was the battle field for several dynasties - Pallava, Chalukya, Cholas who waged wars for getting authority over South India. The Pallava kings penetrated from a time into the North of Cuddapah district and ruled for a certain period during the 5th century. Later on the Cholas defeated the Pallavas and their rule appears to have lasted till the later part of the 8th century. Subsequently the next dynasty which established its authority for a considerable period to be that of Banas.
With the retreat of the Banas, Cuddapah came under the sway of a dynasty of kings called the Rastrakutas. King Indra III (915 A.D.) a later king Krishna III were the popular rulers. With the death of king Krishna III, the power and influence of this dynasty declined. The Telugu Cholas who were feudatories of Chola dynasty ruled entire Cuddapah District and their power seems to have suffered a temporary eclipse due to the aggression of Pandas but soon, the Cholas kingdom firmly established once again in the district during the first half of the 13th century.
In the latter half of 13th century, the district fallen in to the hands of Ambadeva who had temporarily usurped the Kakatiya crown and ruled from Vallur, 15 Kms. from Cuddapah and during his time the land survey carried out and a river channel was constructed at Lebaka. Subsequently Kakatiya King Prataparudra succeeded the throne after death of Ambadeva and ruled the district with Warrangal as the Capital during the opening of 14th century.
But in A.D.1309, came the invasion of the Deccan by Muslims during the reign of Khilji emperor Alla Uddin and Pratapa Rudra was defeated and he was carried as a prisoner to Delhi and hence Warrangal, the capital came into the hands of Alla-ud-din.
In A.D.1336 the Vijayanagar Kingdom was found by Hari Hara and Bukka. During A.D.1344 a Hindu confederation of Warrangal, Krishna Vijaya NagaramRaja and the Hoysala King of Mysore, with an immense force drove the Muslims out of Warrangal and rolled back the tide of their advance. This is the out come establishment of Vijayanagar empire and during the two centuries of its ascendancy.
In the battle of Talikota, the Hindus and Muslims with forces of almost fabulous strength, contested for the supremacy over Deccan and with the result the Hindus were totally defeated and the Deccan fallen into the hands of King of Golkonda.
In the year 1740 the Marathas invaded and defeated the Nawab of Kurnool and Cuddapah. Hyder Ali obtained the possession of Gurramkonda and Cuddapah from the hands of Marathas and appointed his brother-in-law Mir Saheb in Cuddapah district. Hence Mir Saheb and his son Kamaluddin were the first rulers of the district. The district later fell in to the Nizam by the treaties of Mysore and Srirangapatnam.
Later on this area was ceded to the British by the Nizam. Cuddapah tasted the lawlessness of the 'palegars'. Finally Major Munro, the first District Collector took over the reins of administration. He gave peace to the people of this region.
Shaik Peer Shah took prominent part in the first war of Independence in 1857. During the subsequent decades, people followed the leaders of the freedom movement and rejoiced with the rest of the people when India became free in 1947.
