Mustafa Akaydın (born 24 April 1952 in Çorum
), a Turkish politician of the Republican People's Party
(CHP), is the current mayor
of Antalya
, Turkey
. Prior to his mayorship he was a professor
and general surgeon. He is also a former rector of Akdeniz University
. Akaydin won the 2009 local election
, taking over from Menderes Türel of the Justice and Development Party
(AKP).
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Akaydın was born in 1952. His spent his primary, secondary and high school education years in Ankara and İstanbul. He graduated from Hacettepe University, Faculty of Medicine in 1975.
He became a General Surgery Specialist at Ankara University
Medical Science Faculty in 1979. In 1980 he became academician at Akdeniz University .In the following years, he became associate professor in 1984 and then professor in 1992. He studied on vocational training-education, organ transplantation and breast surgery in Germany and USA for a year.
Between the years of 1988 and 1990 he carried out the Chairmanship of Antalya Chamber of Doctors.
The years between 1996 and 2004 he worked as the Vice-Rector of Akdeniz University and from 2004 to 2008 he was the Rector of Akdeniz University. He also carried out the membership of Inter-University Committee between the years of 2000-2008. The last two years of his membership he became The Chairman of Inter-University Committee. On December 1, 2008 he entered politics.
He stood in the 2009 local elections
as a candidate of the Republican People’s Party (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi), obtaining 42.34% of the vote and being elected as Mayor of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality.
Prof. Dr. Mustafa Akaydın is married with 2 children and he also has a grandchild.[2]
