. It is a member of the International Association of Universities.

The University has six faculties. It serves more than 10,000 students at a time.

Though the institution traces its history back to 1944,МосГУ, Алма матер (Alma Mater), p.3 (2006) (in Russian, stating that МосГУ (MosGU)'s origins date back to 1944, starting from the Higher Komsomol School (Высшая комсомольская школа), Institute of Youth (Институт молодежи), Moscow Socio-Humanitarian Academy (Московская социально-гуманитарная академия), to the Moscow University for the Humanities.) it did not become a recognized university until 1992. The current head of the university is Igor Ilyinsky, who published a history of the institution in 2005.
