The name originates from Amaury I de Montfort, the first dynasty of the Comtes de Montfort.

Geography

The commune has slopes in the north which includes the Rambouillet Forest which covers 220 km² (84.9 sq mi). The city is located on a rocky area of 183 m above sea level.

History

King Robert II built a castle in 996 in the hills of Montfort. The castle was destroyed by the English during the Hundred Years' War
