in 2010. After a brilliant play for the 2010 season, he became a regular midfielder for the team and becoming a key player. He was given the captain's armband in early 2011 after captain, Mohd Amri Yahyah
was injured for half of the season. He is notable for scoring from free kicks. Safiq was part of the Selangor

After The 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup
, Safiq was offered a contract by an unnamed club of the Indonesian Super League. However, Safiq turned down the offer as he wanted to stay in Malaysia and continue playing in the Malaysian Super League.
On 30 June 2011, Indonesian club, Persib Bandung
announce that they would give him a contract for the 2011–12 Indonesia Super League season
. However, Safiq has yet to decide either to stay with his current club, Selangor FA
or to join Persib Bandung
for the 2012 season. Safiq later chose not to join Persib Bandung
.
On August 2011 after the 2011 Malaysia Cup
, Safiq was given a three-week trial from the Welsh
club, Cardiff City FC
with the help from the Cardiff owner, Datuk Chan Tien Ghee
. Malaysian striker, Mohd Safee Mohd Sali
was also given a trial by Chan Tien. Safiq officially undergo his 3 week trial on November 24, 2011 and ended on 11th Dcemebr 2011.
He was the key player for the Malaysian squad that won the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup
. It was the first time in history that Malaysia won the AFF Suzuki Cup title.
On 13 and 16 July 2011, Safiq captained the Malaysia XI
in their matches against Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC. Malaysia XI lost 0-4 against Arsenal. Just before the stroke of half time against Liverpool, with Malaysia trailing 0-1, Safiq scored from a free-kick which rocketed into the top left corner to equalise for Malaysia. Despite a spirited comeback, Malaysia XI
went on to lose 3-6 in a thrilling encounter to Liverpool.

Safiq has represented Malaysia since 2005. He earned his first full international cap against Myanmar in the 2007 ASEAN Football Championship. Since then he only made appearances with the under-23 national team.
