- Hawaii is technically represented twice: as part of the United States and as Hawaii itself.
- This is the only second time Hawaii had joined the competition (the first one in 1959).
- 9 out of 10 countries which made it into the semifinals, were not in the semifinals last year: Nicaragua (1968), Yugoslavia (1986), Nigeria (1987), Russia (1992), Aruba (1996), and South Africa and Spain (1999).
