Historical Significance
- Peru managed to place for the first time.
- Colombia managed to place for the fifth consecutive time. This would hold as the longest placement streak (matched by Brazil in 1991), until Colombia itself broke the record with a sixth consecutive placement in 2003.
- Venezuela managed to place for the fourth time in a row, its own personal record for placement. Venezuela also earned its highest placement since winning in 1984.
- The Dominican Republic placed for the third time in a row, after having won back-to-back in 1985 and 1986.
- Bolivia, Brazil and Mexico also placed in 1986.
- This is the first and, as of 2011, only win for Mexico.
- Honduras had last placed in 1983, matching the previous rank of semi-finalist.
- Argentina last placed in 1984. Argentina achieved its highest placement up to that point.
- Paraguay last placed in 1985.
