The Mimika Air crash was the second fatal aviation accident in Papua in less than one month. A cargo plane also crashed in Papua in early April 2009, killing six people.

The plane carried ten people - eight passengers and two pilots. Among the passengers were secretary of the Puncak Jaya polling body, Martin Jitmau and chairman of the local election supervisory committee, Herman Senanfi.

Crash

Indonesian search teams discovered the crash site on Saturday, April 18, 2009, during an air search. The plane had gone down on Mount Gergaji in Papua, close to another crash site of a Trigana Air plane in 2006, which killed nine people. The wreckage was still smoking when found.
