From 1962–66, he taught general studies in a secondary modern school in North Bedfordshire. From 1966–68, he was a director of Power Line Maintenance Ltd. In 1968, he founded Lords Tree Services Ltd. From 1983, as well as being an MP, he was an arboricultural consultant. He is a former president of the Arboricultural Association.
