She is a graduate of Carleton University's
Journalism
program and began her career in television at CTV
answering phone calls. She moved on to writing for CTV News
and Canada AM
before moving to City TV
in 1998 where she began working as a writer. Soon after, she became a reporter and anchored CityNews' weekend newscasts alongside Francis D'Souza
. She was then moved to CityNews
at Five, weekdays at 5:00pm alongside Dwight Drummond
.
On January 19, 2010, CITY-TV announced cuts to several news programs and staff. The 5pm news was cancelled, and Merella Fernanadez was part of a company wide layoff that affected 6% of CITY's staff, and several on-air personalities.
As of April 2011, Merella return to CTV as news correspondent with CTV News Channel in Toronto.
