Founded in 1956 by Jules Koenig, this party is one of the oldest parties in the country. It was earlier known as the Mauritian Union from 1946 to 1956. After the post-colonial era, the PMSD was led by Sir Gaetan Duval from 1967 to 1995. The PMSD is known as the only political party which was not agreeing for an independent Mauritius. It started out with a huge mass in the minority communities such as the Christians and the Muslims and then with the arrival of the MMM
in the 1970's, it faded its way. In 1967, it held 23 seats, in 1976 it held only 7 and until now it holds only 4 Mps. It is now focused with the Creole community and has been a loyal ally of the Mauritian Labour Party
since long.
In 2000 it formed part of the historical MSM/MMM
alliance as a minority party. It joined the Social Alliance
which was ruled the Labour Party and its other allies. In 2009, it merged with the Xavier Duval Mauritian Party and retained its name but however Xavier Luc Duval
became leader and Maurice Allet became President.
