Crandall was arrested on January 4, 2008, after allegedly assaulting girlfriend Elyse Sewell

contestant, in a hotel in Sacramento, California
; he was charged with domestic assault.
In an interview with the Singapore Straits Times, Sewell stated she had ended her relationship with Crandall due to his infidelities while she was overseas working in Japan, but they had reconciled previous to the assault.
The domestic violence case was dismissed on January 8, 2008 due to the lack of interest from Sewell to pursue further legal action.
In 2009, Crandall was dismissed from The Shins along with Jesse Sandoval
and replaced by Ron Lewis and Joe Plummer
