Marryatville was settled in the 19th century by the Scarfe family, whose name later became associated with South Australian retailer Harris Scarfe. Eden Park, the grand two-storey Victorian house the family built, is now used as the high school's Year 12 campus; and the timber stables, a short distance away, have been converted into a music centre.
In 2005 Marryatville's Performing Arts Centre, The Forge, was opened. It serves as a performance area for year 11 and 12 Drama Productions and is also used by outside theatre groups. The film Hey Hey It's Esther Blueberger (released 2008) included several scenes filmed at Marratville High School.
The local state primary school, Marryatville Primary School, is actually located in the adjacent suburb Kensington
.
The school was established in 1883 at a site on Kensington Road, and moved to its current location in 1978. The first principal was Mr. William J. Kent. Classes range from Reception
to Year 7, with up to 400 students at the school. Most Year 8 students enter Marryatville High School with some students zoned to Norwood Morialta High School
or others going to private schools near by with some girls going to Loreto Marryatville.
It also provides "before and after school" care and vacation care. There is an active children's art studio, drama academy and Junior and Senior Choir. On Saturdays there is also a Japanese language and culture school.
