Merklein turned professional in 1994, and won four doubles titles during his career. On July 7, 1997, he reached his highest singles ranking of World Number 160, and reached his highest doubles ranking on January 12, 2004, when he became World Number 37.

Merklein currently resides in Gainesville, Florida.
